[SU Globalists]: An inborn storyteller

For SU Globalists, a profile story on a fabulous female photojournalist and storyteller, Maranie Rae Staab.

Photo courtesry: Maranie Rae Staab

A white shirt, jeans and a pair of black frame glasses — this is how Maranie Rae Staab always dresses. If she puts on a blazer and binds her hair, she turns into the perfect stereotypical image of a businesswoman. But with a padded vest and brown sports hat, she establishes her identity as a photojournalist.

Staab focuses on humanitarian issues in her work, which has brought her to places like Eastern and Western Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. After her journeys, she came to Syracuse a year ago to become a graduate student at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

Since then, she has worked with a variety of people here in Syracuse, including the displaced people who fled from their home countries to the U.S. due to continuous wars. Staab is working with resettled refugees in Syracuse for her ongoing project, “Geography of Belonging,” which provides a comprehensive view on their new lives here.
